Mitch performed as INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, mimicking his exact moves and personality and captivating the audience with his voice. “I couldn’t believe it, I didn’t know what to say when they called my name. “The other acts were all amazing

and put on great performances, the whole show was a great event. “It was incredible and I totally recommend anyone wanting to get on stage and have a go,” he said. Mitch won $1000 which he will be donating to Blenheim School. Hayden Lawrence won second place with his life-like performance as Billy Joel followed by Annabelle Lewis as Birdy in third place. Hayden won $750 which will be donated to Marlborough Youth Branch Asthma Foundation, and Annabelle won $500 which will be donated to Synergy Youth Mentor-

The show was opened by compere and celebrity judge Jackie Clarke who had the audience in stitches throughout the night. “I can’t believe how talented people are from Marlborough, I can’t tell the difference between them and the artists they are performing as,” she joked during the show. Each contestant poured their heart and soul into their performance, drawing loud applause and cheering from the audience. Show co-ordinator Robyn Simmons said each performer’s portrayal

of their chosen artist was what made the judging difficult. “The feedback I received was amazing with the audience on both nights commenting on how good the performances were and how close the competition was. “In the end Mitch’s portrayal of Michael Hutchence’s moves and attitude was what won him first place, but the others were so good that it was really hard to choose,” she said. The number of people who attended both nights were up with 270 on Thursday’s preview show and 280 at the awards evening.

By Kristy Martin Blenheim police station will be among those throughout the country throwing their doors open this Saturday, when New Zealand Police holds its first ever National Open Day. The country’s 12 police districts are inviting the public to head to their local station and gain an understanding of what a modern police service looks like. Sergeant Mike Porter of the Blenheim Crime Prevention Group says community members will be able to step inside the station and see a range of different equipment and vehicles used by local officers, tour the cells and even watch search and rescue demonstrations. “It’s about making police more accessible to the public, sharing our expertise in our equipment and people can ask our experienced officers about how things are done,” Sgt Porter said. “There will also be opportunities for recruitment,” he said. Dog handlers and armed offenders squad (AOS) officers will also be in attendance and ready to answer questions about their roles. Sgt Porter said children will enjoy seeing police uniforms up close and might even get the chance to step inside a police car. While this is the first national police open day, a similar initiative by Blenheim police eight years ago saw 1000 people through the doors of the station. The open day runs from 10am-2pm this Saturday.

Country singers clean up at awards By Kristy Martin Members of the Wairau Plains Music Muster have cleaned up at the 25th Golden Valley Country Music Awards in Takaka. Nine local musos travelled to the event, held on the last weekend in May, and came home with trophies, certificates and even a Fender guitar! Bree Rossiter won Best Dressed Junior and was highly commended in the Junior Gospel and Junior Open events. The 10-year-old, who also plays the ukulele, has only been singing in competitions for one year. Her sister Ashleigh Rossiter, aged 13, won a Fender prize pack which included a brand new guitar. Bree and Ashleigh’s mum Michelle said the two girls sang every day ‘from morning to night’ at home. Bree, Ashleigh and fellow contestant Gemma O’Rourke

also placed in the Country Group category, while Gemma and Ashleigh won the Duo category for performers aged 17 years and under. The girls’ instructor Janice Thompsett was highly com mended i n t he Yodelling Open class and also won the Syd Briggs Trophy for Best out of the Bay Non-finalist. ROADS CLOSED The persistent rain has impacted a number of roads in the Marlborough region. Ward Beach Road and Taylor Pass Road were closed yesterday due to flooding. Awatere Valley Road beyond White Bluff Ford (Shingle Fans) was expected to remain closed overnight, with contractors returning to the site this morning to remove gravel.

MEETING MOVED The venue for a public meeting on the results of the Top of the South hospital review has been moved. The meeting, next Wednesday night at 5pm, will now be held at the Convention Centre. The event was originally planned for the Scenic Hotel but after a public outcry that venue was deemed too small.

BROTHERS ARRESTED Two brothers have been arrested by police over a number of thefts from cars at the Wither Hills Farm Park carpark. The pair, aged 31 and 29 who are both unemployed, were arrested at 2pm last Friday at a Redwood Street address. They were held in custody to appear in the Blenheim District Court the following day.

THIEF ANSWERS STOLEN PHONE The owner of a stolen iPhone tried to call the device and was met with laughter on the other end, according to police. The iPhone 4 was taken off a table in Fairweathers Bar in Blenheim on Sunday. Police said the phone was stolen while the owner was not at the table. When the owner rang their phone, the thief answered, laughed and hung up.

In the next couple of weeks contractor Downer will trim the grass beside the walkway to allow Mr Martin to paint in

a straight line along the edges of the path. The Marlborough District Council have stated they will consider painting other areas of the town if the trial is successful. Mr Martin’s aqua blue-coloured product can glow for up to 15 hours, is resistant to abrasion, fire and solvents and charges in 10 minutes.

Cash gift for ‘winter warmth’ By Kristy Martin When Talua Simonsen (right) attended church on Sunday, she never expected to be handed an envelope containing $130 cash from an anonymous benefactor. Ms Simonsen, a pensioner and Salvation Army volunteer, can now use the money to pay for having her heat pump cleaned, which she feels she was ‘bullied’ into by an out-of-town company. The company called Ms Simonsen at home and wouldn’t take no for an answer when she refused to have her heat pump cleaned for their exorbitant price. The envelope handed to her at church simply said “For your winter warmth, God Bless”. “I just wanted to say thank you,” Ms Simonsen said to whoever gifted the money. “It is very appreciated and it’s going to help a lot.

“It’s just so nice to think someone in the community would do something like that.” Ms Simonsen was left without a working heat pump after she gave in and had the device cleaned, but she says it has since been fixed after she contacted the company and requested they come back.

School trees a hazard Dear Ed, I refer to your papers of May 14 and 16 regarding the Wairau Valley School and associated renovations. We have been neighbours to the school for 16 years. Our property borders the school for some 100m on the eastern side of the school grounds. The pine trees on the school boundaries were a hazard to the pupils. They had been cut back and trimmed many times over the years resulting in their coppicing habits leaving a tangled mess of branches, fencing wire and waratahs. Not a safe place for children to play. The removal of these trees have made the school grounds warmer in the winter and I am sure with future landscaping it will make the school grounds a very attractive and enjoyable school for pupils to attend. District health review Dear Ed, Well Marlborough it’s time to be showing how much we all need to know whether the District Health Board intends to keep or maintain our surgical services at our local hospital. Remember when lots of people (1000) met and some stood for two hours? It made a big difference, as things are pretty good at Wairau. We don’t need services cut! So, people, they planned to have this meeting at the Scenic Hotel with only enough seating for 120 people. We must make sure we have a larger place to meet. Living at her own pace Whether she’s working at the winery, writing, or running long distances, Annabelle Latz does it with infectious enthusiasm and ceaseless energy. The two time women’s winner of both the Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon and Marlborough Marathon spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about her change in career, her love of Marlborough and plans for the future. If you feel like you’ve seen Annabelle Latz‘s name on these pages before, it’s probably because you have. She came to Marlborough in January 2012 when hired by the Sun, and spent 15 months reporting before curiosity drew her to Marlborough’s wine sector. Now, she is a cellar hand at New Zealand Wineries, and writes for publications within the wine industry and the agricultural sector. She said she couldn’t be happier with her decision. “I love being a cellar hand and writing about wine. “I’d love to pursue wine communications more and get into the stories behind the vines. “It’s addictive. I just love going to work.” Annabelle even picked grapes for a Pinot Noir she is making from this year’s harvest. Raised in North Canterbury, Annabelle attended Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, where she competed in several sports. She had always dreamed of being a journalist, and she completed her Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication, and Graduate Diploma in Journalism, at the University of Canterbury. Her first journalism job was at The Christchurch Star, where she primarily wrote for the Selwyn Times. It was in that two-year spell she began to take running and multi sport seriously, claiming a national half marathon title, and competing in her first half ironman. In 2008 she headed overseas, spending a combined three and a

half years living and working in northern Queensland, Ireland, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and the south of France. She said she wanted to head to Northern Africa next year for an overseas vintage. “I especially loved Africa, and I can’t wait to go there again,” she said. “It kind of gets under your skin. It’s so unpredictable and raw.” During her travels, Annabelle ran races in most countries she was in. She said The Comrades ultramarathon in South Africa, an 89km race between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, left a big impression. “There were 21,000 runners on the start line at 5.30am, and some of them weren’t wearing shoes. “A lot of the race towards Durban was downhill, so my quads and hamstrings were burning, I was feeling niggles, and my mind started to wander. “I saw an old Hilux, like my dad used to drive, and I was convinced for a minute he had driven to South Africa to watch me race!” Battles aside, Annabelle finished in nine hours and 19 minutes, in the top six per cent of the female field. Despite her travels, she said she was in no rush to leave Marlborough. “It’s a really neat place. You can get involved in things and make the region work for you, whether you want to take it competitively or just get out there.

“It’s really cool to take it in your stride, set your own goals and create your own achievements.” Annabelle and friend Bridget Evans enjoyed bringing sport and the community together last year, raising more than $3000 for the

Catwalk Spinal Cord Injury Trust. Annabelle’s next project will be in the summer, when she sets up a Special Olympics Junior Athletics group in Marlborough, with a focus on working alongside primary-school-aged children with

intellectual disabilities. She also hopes to compete in the Alpine Marathon from Lake Tennyson to Hanmer in December, and Challenge Wanaka Half Ironman in February. “It’s fun to be busy,” she said.

Federated Farmers Marlborough has new president A third-generation Awatere Valley farmer has been named the new president of Federated Farmers Marlborough. Greg Harris was announced as the organisation’s new president following their AGM last month. Mr Harris, a sheep and beef farmer on his 800 hectare family property, Mount Adde, has stepped up from his provincial meat and fibre chairman position to take the new role. He said his strong ancestral links to farming would stand him in good stead. “I have grown up with a great empathy for animals and passion for good custodianship of the land. “This is an integral part of being a farmer and I think people are starting to understand that again, with food security, environmental and animal welfare issues becoming more topical lately.” He said his aim was to get the most out of a diverse Marlborough farming sector which grows 73 per cent of the country’s wine, is New Zealand’s fifth-largest forestry producer and has strong aquaculture and livestock contingents. “My main goal is to maintain a balance and remain objective while advocating on behalf of our members. “There’s a lot going on in our province and it’s critical the federation communicates well on this.”

Federated Farmers national president Bruce Wills said Mr Harris was well-placed to do the job well. “We are in a year of change within the federation, with leadership changes both nationally and provincially. “Greg is a passionate advocate for the farming community and I know he’ll do a fantastic job.” Mr Harris is a qualified carpenter, who has studied agriculture both here and abroad. He returned home to manage the family operation and development programmes 14 years ago. He replaces Gary Barnett in the president role, but Mr Barnett will continue as the Marlborough organisation’s treasurer.

National honours for Orphans

Blenheim Or phans Club member Leon Broadbridge was named new national president at the 40th Dominion Conference of the Association of Kindred Clubs held over Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Secretary John Henry was elected to the national executive and Ken Ham, who was a founding member of the Blenheim club, is now junior vice president of the national body. The biennial conference came to Marlborough for the third time since its inception which was quite an honour for one of the youngest and smallest clubs

in the association. The three-day event, held at the Clubs of Marlborough, attracted 180 representatives from Savage and Orphans Clubs throughout New Zealand. The weekend, which fully involved all members of the local club, featured a huge variety of music, singing and comedy sketches and Mr Henry described it as a great success. He said it was a great honour to have three local members recognised at a national level and also highlighted the strength and quality of the Blenheim club. The Blenheim Orphans Club

was founded in 1972 as a maleonly group for performers in music, verse and comedy and is constantly looking for suitable like-minded people to enhance its membership. Members regularly entertain at local rest homes and social events throughout the year. The Savage Club movement was founded in London in 1857 as a means of entertainment and fellowship. The Association of Kindred Clubs is the national body under which Savage and Orphans Clubs in New Zealand operate.

Book presented to local author By Kristy Martin Renwick man Noall Berryman’s book detailing his career in the Forestry Service and his lifelong passion for hunting has been published and presented to him at a small ceremony at the Blenheim library. ‘My Life in the Mountains of Time’, written from Mr Berryman’s journals and completed in 2004, finally found its way to the publisher after he sent it to some friends in Hokitika on the West Coast. Former Westland mayor Maureen Pugh got hold of the manuscript and set about having it published, with the help of the Hokitika Lions Club who read and edited the chapters. Ms Pugh travelled to Blenheim personally last week to present the book to Mr Berryman (pictured right), now 83, and also gifted a copy to the library. The historic book details Mr Berryman’s life growing up in Murchison and joining the Forestry Service shortly before his 17th birthday, a career that aided his love of hunting by allowing him to travel to remote locations around the South Island. Mr Berryman’s daughter Christine and son Ian also attended the book presentation, as did his granddaughter Amanda. “It’s a great achievement for Dad,” said Ian, who is visiting from Australia. “He started writing it in long-

hand on lots of paper so I bought him a computer, packaged it up and brought it over on the plane.” His father adds: “All of this writing took me two years with one finger!” The book is available online through Amazon, with the proceeds going to the Lions Club.

Over 500 helping By Celeste Lodewyk Cancer Society Marlborough has over 500 people in Marlborough volunteering their time for a variety of activites from street appeal collections to cooking meals for people receiving cancer treatment. Volunteer co-ordinator for Cancer Society Marlborough Margaret Tepania said volunteers were “vital” to the organisation. “Our volunteers help in so many ways and are people who are really kind and generous with their time,” she says. There are several groups of volunteers within the organisation who arrange activities such as delivering fresh baking to Wairau Hospital’s Oncology department each week. There is also another group of 80 volunteers, headed by Chris Beattie who prepare casseroles and soups for cancer patients who have undergone treatment. “Here at Cancer Society Marlborough we truly appreciate all that our volunteers do for us - thank you,” she says.

Marlborough Futures 2014 saw about 140 people aged 15-19 from around the region meet at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology's Blenheim campus for a variety of industry workshops. Participants had the choice to take four of the 12 workshops. The options included engineering, hairdressing and beauty and IT, and each

workshop was attended by an education provider and someone from the industry. Mayor Alistair Sowman spoke to the group at the conference's conclusion. T he con ference was bought to Marlborough for the first time after four years at Nelson's NMIT campus. NMIT youth and communities manager Grant McNeill said he though the conference had been more successful in its first year here than its first year in Nelson. He said the more youth were exposed to careers, the more likely they would find

what they wanted to do. “The thing is you may have students come out of high school and think they want to do something, but often it is based on what their parents do or what they see on TV. “They might know three of the workshops they want to do and choose the fourth at random, and often they end up liking that the best.” NMIT ran the event in conjunction with Community College Marlborough and the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce.

The 11th annual Cook Strait Whale Survey will get underway this Saturday, in a bid to determine how humpback whales are recovering since whaling ended. Former whalers will again be part of the Department of Conservation research team spotting humpbacks migrating through the strait on their annual journey from Antarctic waters to South Pacific breeding grounds. The Cook Strait Whale Survey, a DOC partnership with OMV New Zealand Limited, has run each winter since 2004. Its primary aim is to assess humpback whale recovery since commercial whaling ended in New Zealand in 1964, but the research also assists efforts to protect humpback whales in the South Pacific and Southern Ocean. Last year bad weather hampered the survey effort making it difficult to see whales out at sea from an Arapawa Island lookout point. In total, 59 humpbacks were counted.

Researchers are hoping for better weather to enable more whale sightings in this year’s four-week survey which ends on Saturday July 12. Members of the public can assist the survey by reporting sightings of whales in the Cook Strait area or travelling up the

By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim man is upset at Telecom’s decision to close down one of their voicemail services. The One Voicemail service, which links mobile and landline mailboxes together, will be shut down on Thursday, June 26. Customers have been offered an alternative of separate voicemail lines for each of their phone numbers. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, receives messages left on his landline instantaneously on his mobile phone. He said he was disappointed by the change, as the system allowed him to look out for his daughter, who has a serious medical condition. “If we’re both out, and people ring the landline to say my daughter’s gone down, I’m not going to get the message. “I don’t think they’ve thought it

through, and there must be others out there in a similar situation. “What they’re doing is quite dangerous.” The man was alerted of the change by letter on May 26, a month before the system’s eventual finishing date. Telecom New Zealand head of corporate communications Richard Llewellyn said a recent upgrade of technology “under the hood” was behind the change. “It means the ability of new technology to work with the legacy fixed technology was not there. “We decided it was better to offer people an alternative.” He said the service was not common among Telecom customers. “The product is declining in popularity, as more and more people move to mobile voicemail. “Less than 0.01 per cent of our customer base uses it.”

By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough Girls’ College year 12 pupil Georgia Catterick (pictured right) is delighted after being selected for the New Zealand under-19 cycling team. It is the first New Zealand call-up for Georgia, 16, who will join the team for the Cycling Australia Under-19 Road National Championships in Canberra. She is one of six women in the 12-strong squad.

Georgia has a busy schedule, competing in a 15 kilometre time trial, 80km road race and criterium on successive days, starting on July 4. She said she was out riding when she got the call on Wednesday last week. “I’ve never been in the New Zealand team before. I was quite stoked.” She said she was excited about testing herself against strong opposition.

“The best Australian riders will be there. “I don’t know how I’ll go, but I’ll do my best.” For the next three weeks, Georgia’s training regime includes hill climbs and time trial work during the week, trips to Nelson for Saturday training and four-hour rides on Sundays. After returning from Canberra her focus will turn to the Benchmark Homes Elite Series, and Nationals next year.

Motorcyclists ride away with trophy haul By Adam Poulopoulos A group of Marlborough cross-country motorcyclists hopes their recent success leads to more riders taking up the sport in the region. The Marlborough contingent rode away with seven trophies between them as the Leatt 2014 South Island Cross-Country Championship Series came to an end recently. The trophies were presented to the group on their home soil, after the final round of the series was hosted by the Marlborough Motorcycle Club in Ward recently. Rider Andy McCallum said he hoped other motorcyclists would try their luck at the discipline. “I think there are a lot of good trail riders here capable of doing it. ‘With motocross if you don’t get a good start it kind of decides your race, but in
